Psychotherapy Programme - Course Modules

Module 1

Theory and Practice of Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy Part I and an Introduction to Clinical Practice.

Conducted over 4 days of training, this module is the entry requirement to the programme and must be successfully completed before progressing to the remaining modules of the programme.

The aim of the module will be to:

  • Assist students integrate their Practitioner and Master Practitioner knowledge in a therapeutic context
  • Explore student understanding of NLP applied in the context of behavioural modelling
  • Develop an awareness of the philosophy and models of NLP applied in the context of therapy (NLPt, Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy)
  • Promote an integrated competence in the methodologies of Neuro Linguistic psychotherapy (NLPt) including the appropriateness of interventions
  • Develop a sound method in client assessment and history taking
  • Create a clear code of practice in contracting, beginning and ending relationships with clients
  • Stimulate clarity in evidence based practice

Assessment

  1. Completed written integration of pre-module reading
  2. Completion of INLPTA Master Practitioner requirements including
    1. INLPTA Master Practitioner Written Integration
    2. Modelling Project (2000 words)
    3. Write up of 10 hours of client work applying Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy knowledge
  3. Self & peer assessment
  4. Development of student log
  5. Practical assessment during modules
  6. Written assignment 3000 words on the Theory & Practice of NLPt to be completed by the final module Part III

Module 2 & Module 4

Human Development Parts I & II
Psychopathology and Pharmacology Parts I & II

The aim of these two modules is for the student to acquire a critical understanding of the relevance of studies in human development, psychopathology, psychopharmacology, sexuality and ethics.

These modules will raise awareness and understanding of reference to the following.

  • Knowledge of human development from infancy to old age
  • Cognitive and social development
  • The development of gender
  • Diagnostic assessment of presenting issues
  • Classification of psychopathology including the use of DSM IV
  • Comparative diagnostic criteria of commonly presenting aspects of mental illness
  • History taking in mental issues
  • The relationship of the above to the practice of Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy

In addition the student will learn

  • To utilise the information in MIMS and the British National Formulary (BNF)
  • To gain knowledge of commonly prescribed psychotropic agents
  • A basic understanding of psycho-pharmacology
  • A knowledge of ethical issues in therapy and ways of responding

  4. Written assignment 3000 words on Psychopathology, Pharmacology, and Human Development

Module 3

Theory and Practice of NLPt Part II
Clinical Practice Part II

Conducted over 4 days, with the prerequisite of attendance at Module I.

The aim of this module is to:

  • Enhance the client therapist relationship
  • Promote reflexivity and self-awareness
  • Develop understanding of issues of transference and counter transference
  • Enhance understanding of boundaries and the challenges that can occur
  • Create an awareness of inter professional relationships and the appropriateness of referrals
  • Recognise the limits of competence and the need for referral
  • Discuss issues of confidentiality
  • Develop competence in report writing and case-conceptualisation
  • Promote understanding of the impact and potential of supervision
  • Understand the benefits and drawbacks of different supervision models
  • Become aware of different approaches to NLP as a psychotherapy
  • Critically evaluate the evidence of NLPt as an effective approach

  3. Supervisor, self and peer assessment
  4. Practical assessment
  5. Written Assignment 3000 words on Clinical Practice to be completed before final module Part V

Module 5 & Module 8

Research Methods Parts I & II
Social Studies Parts I & II

These modules are conducted over 7 days and are designed to offer:

(i) An Introduction to Social Studies

  • Perspectives on social psychology
  • Concepts of self and relationship with others
  • Cultural and gender differences
  • Appreciation of social identity
  • Theories relating to aggressive behaviour
  • The nature and function of attitudes
  • The responses to social influence

(ii) An Introduction to Research methods

  • Approaches to research and their strengths and weaknesses
  • Models of feedback and assessment of practice
  • Assessment of the impact of interventions

(iii) The relationship and application of the learning from the above in the context of Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy

Assessment

  1. Completed written integration of pre-module reading
  2. Development log review
  3. Peer and self assessment
  4. Written Assignment, 3000 words on Research based psychotherapy, or a new model of therapy

Module 6 & Module 7

Traditional Psychotherapeutic Models

Conducted over 6 days in two parts, this learning set will provide an overview of the major psychotherapeutic approaches which are practiced in the UK and their relationship with the development of the modality of Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy. Attendance at both modules is necessary for completion.

The aim of these modules is for the psychotherapy trainee to develop

  • A basic understanding and appreciation of current Psychotherapies including Psychoanalysis, Person Centred, Behavioural, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis, by contrasting the history, personality theory and process of psychotherapy of each model.
  • A recognition of the essential similarities and differences between counselling, psychotherapy, and coaching
  • An awareness of the merits of and appropriateness of referral to practitioners skilled in different modalities
  • An understanding of how the day to day practice of the above may differ from Neuro Linguistic psychotherapy

Assessment

  3. Practical Assessment as well as peer and self assessment
  4. Written Assignment 3000 words on Traditional Psychotherapeutic Models

Module 9

Theory and Practice of NLPt III
Clinical Practice III

Conducted over 2 days, this final module of the theoretical content is the assessment of the trainee psychotherapist's progress on the psychotherapy programmes and the content is designed to promote best practice in an already experienced therapist.

Students who attend this module are required to have engaged in active clinical practice of an ongoing nature, and to be engaged in regular supervision by a supervisor meeting the requirements of NLPtCA Guidelines for Accreditation.

The content will include

  • Legal issues relating to psychotherapy
  • Ethical requirements of best practice
  • Managing a psychotherapy private practice

Assessment

  1. Written closed book examination on the contents of the entire programme
  2. Case conceptualisation and presentation
  3. Peer and self assessment
  4. Development log review
  5. Evidence of supervision reports
  6. Completion of 3000 word assignments in Theory and Practice of NLPt

Module 10 & 11

Clinical Practice Part IV
Clinical Practice Part V

These two weekends are designed to integrate clinical experience of the theoretical application of the previous twelve months.

The modules will include assessment of

  • Development Log Review
  • Presentation of Case Studies and Research Topics
  • Self, peer and tutor review
  • Evidence of Supervision Report
  • Evidence of 12 hours of personal therapy with an Accredited Neurolinguistic Psychotherapist
  • Evidence of 8 days of clinical placement
  • Assessment of supervision and self supervision
  • Completion of 3000 word assignment in Clinical Practice
